Get the radio converted over. Install a amplifier and use a set of larger speakers that require no modificaton to the car. The sound is in the speakers. I played around with drivers under 6" in size an was never happy with the sound. I have these Kenwood speakers in the rear, Polks in the dash and an ADS amp running the rear.

Given the limitation of the factory controls, tone vs seperate bass/treble. You are always going to be somewhat limited in your adjustability. The only other alternative is to plumb a graphic eq near the amp or use a remote mount radio, keep in mind that every component you add is a source for more noise in the system.

speakers & converted head unit.

Paul,

I would disconnect your head unit and leave it in place. Then find a cd changer with a remote that can operate the whole system. I used to have a Sony RMX-2 remote commander- its about the size of a detached face plate, and controlled my whole system. This will not have a built in tuner or amp- but it had a remote mounted box with RCA outputs for an amp, and tuner inputs if you wanted to add a tuner. I mounted the box under a seat and kept the controller in the center console (not a Vette).

Sony has not made this unit for years, but you can still find it ocassionally on E-bay. I am sure other manufactures have a similar remote mounted head unit.

For really good sound, you could add a small box in the rear with a multi channel amp- without altering the car at all.

Paul

If that one has pre-amp outputs a small amp will do wonders for it, you can also add a 6-disk changer that routes through the antenna, I have on in my formula.
