i dug out my book and went to valve train, page 81 of the new edition(1989)
he say's stock rocker's good on street type engine's with a imposed limit of
5500 rpm grab the book i ain't given ya' no stories :nono:
there has been a debate on rockers some think they are BS others see the
advantage i didn't remember Smokey puting that rpm as a safe limit :skep:
i've turned them to 6-6500 and only broke a few did ware-out guides pretty
fast but i expected it.
valve guides. the extra little bit of side load as the stock rocker rubs, scrubs
across the top of the valve or lash caps i ran on the S S valves i learned i
could test them pretty easy though
You have to remember that Smokey wrote his book before the modern roller rockers were improved to the point they have today. Rollers were considered throw away items back then. They are much improved 30 years later and are much more reliable.
from page 82 "a good roller rocker does everything better than a stock rocker" i'm reading this from the 1989 updated book.
he says he ran stockers because of rules. ome of the picture's show's what
i think is a magnum rocker from C Cams
Smokey only used factory stamped rockers because the rules he raced under required them. Once that requirement was removed, he threw the stamped ones away and went with full roller rockers from the aftermarket.
Smokey's 1989 book says stamped up to 5500rpm; few of us street drivers will see this rpm except on the dyno. I think my 'application' is covered.
oh i bet there is a few people out there that turn them past 5500. even if it's
just in 1st gear then easy into 2nd :steering:
Back in the 70's when my 69 was my daily driver, I shifted the L46 to 6000 rpm at least 10 times every time I drove it. I shifted at 6500 when I went to the #140 factory solid cam. I used the factory stamped rockers. Today I use 6000+ in the Z almost as frequently. I have mellowed a bit over the years.
ad. info::: "When the rockerarm cycle's the roller tip sweeps back-and-forth
across the butt of the valvestem. the contact point must not move closer than
.020-in. to the edge of the stem" :skep:
