Is there a wheel well paint that is superior to any other? My 72 is coming back from the paint shop any day now ( been without it for 3 months ) and I know I am going to have to dress up the wheel well area. I was thinking of perhaps an epoxy type paint for durability. I assume they came from the factory black? Any advise would be appreciated.

Krylon semi-flat black will work just fine. It's gonna get dirty anyway, so don't spend a bunch of money unnecessarily. if it gets ugly, hose it off, and respray it.
You could try the black epoxy paint spray cans which you can get from the Home Depot type stores. It did my rocker panels and steering column with this stuff and they have held up great.
The wheelwells will probably take more abuse than anything. Maybe a POR15 type product would wear better, if it will stick to any fiberglass areas and not harm it.
I used rubberised under body spray from carquest. The 3M product is thicker but looks brown. The carquest product is cheaper $1.88 a can and also looks blacker.
I used two cans per wheel well. You need to mack up everything on the car as this is messy. I bought some black plastic from Home Depot and masked up the bodywork (ie all of top). I then used aluminum foil to wrap around the steel frame (bits you can see in the wheelwell. I also hung some more black plastic behind the fenders (where the a-arm rubber flaps go) to stop spray going in the engine.
