Well my alternator was failing, so I popped the hood to check it out. The suspension arm had whacked my alternator pretty good (I've got a groove in my suspension arm now from the alternator fan). I got a replacement unit, but dangit I don't want to install it b/c the only way to get it tight enough means that it sits to low in the car, likely repeating the above situation.
I can't get the alternator to sit higher, 'cause my upper alternator bracket arm then won't properly reach the screw hole on the alternator...
I can't get the alternator to sit lower, cause then it hits the suspension...
I can't get the alternator to sit where it is, cause then the dang belt is loose.
Criminey, what does it take to simply mount this thing properly? Grrrrr.
Over the last week, I have become very familiar with the alt bracket. Can't you get a shorter hose for your alternator to pull it "up"? My alternator is more upright and much closer to the valve cover. Could you post a picture of your setup?
btw, I tried a March alternator bracket and had clearance problems with my power steering pump.
Yes it can. Loosen the upper (adjusting) bracket to move it downard. Once the desired height (so the hood will close) is reached. Tighten the upper bracket in that position. Replace the belt. Loosen the nut on the lower bracket. push altenator to the end of the opening on the adjusting bracket and place belt on the pulley. Tilt the altenator to the desired tension and tighten the nut on the bottom bolt. This worked for me.
You may have to "clock" the alternator to get the holes to align. You can take the case apart and turn one half of it 60* and screw it back together. This is how they get the same alternator to fit lots of vehicles. Take a look and see if this is your problem. It should fit up high.

I got a replacement for my car and this is what I had to do. Find a buddy with an original alternator and see which way you have to clock it. My replacment alternator was off by one case hole. I removed the case bolts and turned the front half of the case to make it line up with my old alternator. Works good.
Good to see you. Hadn't seen you post in a while. I've had mine out recently for the p/s pump and had none of these problems. Let me know if you would like a couple of pics to see how it should sit.
Ahhh that might be it. I've never heard of clocking the alternator, but that sounds like the rub. Also explains why the original alternator fit just fine in the vette!
I'm going to go practice on my broken one first..
Thanks guys!
Hiya Bob! Yeah it has been a while. Work/Baby/Vette pretty much fill my schedule these days, and the vette doesn't get much attention. :-( We just missed the previous pinball auction; next one is May 22nd down at Lakewood again! ...and I still haven't fixed that dang window motor either.
