Default Want to keep original sidepipe covers while adding headers

Hello:
I'm about to tear down my 69 roadster that i have had for 15 years and one of the areas I want to upgrade is the exhaust. I would like to keep the original covers while adding headers. From the searchs I've done it seems the Hedman headers aren't the best performing so I'm looking for other possible header schemes that would allow me to also use the JCL baffle inserts. I did read that "Prosouth" did this using block huggers and fiberglass covers. Anyone else tackled this?

Thanks for any and all help,
Mike

I have just switched to headers on mine from the factory manifolds and factory sidepipes.
I am using the headmans into a pair custom 3" stainless sidepipes (the actual sidepipe mufflers came from stainlessworks) (3" is pretty much the largest you can fit under the factory covers). I spoke to JCL aboput theres but as theres are 3.5" OD, they only fit under the fiberglass covers.
I have heard the comments about how the headmans are different lengths, but I looked at full length headers, which you would have to turn around the connector pipe nearly 180 to get under the covers (not good either) or go with shorty headers, which would mean some pretty neet and costly fabrication of the pipes to fit them.
When you look at the factory manifolds, they only have a 2" exit and go into a 1-3/4 baffle inside the pipe, very restrictive...so I would have thought that any type of header into a 3" system would be better.
I may well loose some power with the headmans, but as I am driving around the local streets instead of looking for every .00001 of a second at Daytona, the look, performance and relative ease of installation is fine...plus they had to fit under the stock covers and look nice in the process.
I am waiting to get the elbows back from the fab shop tonight that will connect the headers to the sidepipes and the system will be complete...I will post pictures then.

cheers
Nick

I've ordered the headers and sidepipes from StainlessWorks - They haven't showed up yet, but they assure me that they'll fit well under the factory covers (which I bought from Paragon).

A pretty expensive way to go, but I plan on keeping my '68 427 Roadster forever...

Thanks for the responses! Hedmans will probably be the way I end up to go it seems.
Rbbmoose427: which headers did u get from stainless to mate up with the pipes. I did notice that they have some SB headers "coming soon" but do not mention that they go with sidepipes. I should of stated my '69 is a 350/350 4spd.
