Wade, I've heard great things about the Makita 9227 buffer. I think you can get it at http://www.autobodystore.com or at many other places like Lowes and Harbor Freight.

I got the Makita 2-3 years ago and love the thing. Variable speed is really nice and it's balanced well. I found it somewhere else other than the autobody store for around $20 cheaper. I bought most everything else from the Autobody store though.
74-Roadster, Still a very loonnnggg way :cry I do have the rotating assembly at the machine shop getting balanced and having new rod bolts and pistons pressed. Hope to get them back in a week or so. If all goes well it should be running by the end of the year.
Guys..How does one learn to buff...don't dare take it to my 81' for practice..any info would be greatly appreciated!
I don't know of any way to learn except to just go ahead and do it. It's something that you get a feel for after a while and it's not all that difficult. The main thing is to use a slow enough speed not to burn the paint and to keep the buffer moving. I learned on my 74 after trying to hand rub the lacquer out by hand. You start out with the buffer on slow speed and as the shine comes up you increase the speed and lightly pull the buffer away from the surface so that it just skims in the final stages. Like I said, it's not something that's easy to explain. You can read up on it in any of the paint books out there. If you want to try it on something other than the vette you can try it on an older car with pain in need of care of possibly buy a junk fender to practice on.
