Re: Does your Vette have Matching Numbers? (Red Sting 70)
Hi,
It seems like lots of people go strictly for matching numbers, or are against it for various (valid) reasons. The solution to this is to have one matching-numbers vette and a second non-matching numbers vette! :D That way you have the best of both worlds! The red vette has matching number engine, tranny, and heads. The carb was replaced (not a correctly numbered one) and the alternator we got it with is also not correct for '71's and probably some other parts as well. The door glass is also correct for the year...but now we're just getting picky. As for the black vette...well that's the exact opposite in every way. It's a big block (a Chevy '72 block...never checked from what vehicle), 4-speed, msd ignition, etc. Not much is "original" let alone matching numbers. So when we want to cruise in a very smooth, very quiet and very slow car (ok it's not THAT slow...) we drive the red vette and impress people that it's got the original engine, tranny etc. When we want to shake up Quebec and it's surrounding provinces we take the black vette out and show people what Corvettes could really do. :D
Re: Does your Vette have Matching Numbers? (Red Sting 70)
Yes, I have a 1972 LS-5 which I bought new and still have. All the numbers match. Any performance mods that I made and the parts that I took off, I still have in a box in my garage, that includes the air pump and injectors :U which I removed before the car was six week old and the original spare tire. :D
Re: Does your Vette have Matching Numbers? (Red Sting 70)
Both of my Vettes have matching numbers. But I couldn't care less. Nor does the market, as these two Vettes aren't special, beyond being Vettes. They are my toys, and not investments. If I had something really special, I'd worry about it more. But for most of our cars, it just doesn't matter. :nonod:
Re: Does your Vette have Matching Numbers? (Red Sting 70)
With the exception of the master cyclinder, starter, alternator, battery, belts & hoses, soft top and tires mine is OEM original and numbers matching. It's in excellent condition with low miles so in order for this particular car to maintain it's value it will have to stay that way.
My next Vert will be a bumpered non-matching four speed. I can be more versatile with that :hurray: :hurray:
Re: Does your Vette have Matching Numbers? (Red Sting 70)
Let's see, I have the orig engine block, caps, crank, rods and some bolts. Replaced everything else on the engine. Trans is a non-orig 700R4 but the rear diff housing is 'correct' but has 3.54 gears that were not offered in any '80 Corvette.
All other items that have been replaced are from the aftermarket. Thank goodness for a healthy, reasonable quality, aftermarket parts supplier network..
Re: Does your Vette have Matching Numbers? (DJ Dep)
I'm having trouble finding out info on this vette.
Like at least, when the new engine was put in.
I might have to walk away from this one, and postpone
my dream of owning that 1970 Red Stingray, without matching numbers.
Actually my dream is ANY Corvette that is certifiable.
Re: Does your Vette have Matching Numbers? (Red Sting 70)
Yes, my Vette has matching numbers. That is what I wanted when I was shopping for a Vette. But, after owning it for about six months I began searching for ways to improve performance in handling and etc. If I had it to do over I would not spend the extra $ to have a #'s matching car. If you are interested in originality, NCRS type of stuff, or resale I would go for #'s matching. If its just for fun and you have a lot of aftermarket upgrades planned I would not.
