I have A "72" with the mechanical tach drive. Thinking of installing HEI. Anybody convert there mech tach to A electronic tach. Where did you buy parts. How difficult to do the conversion. THANK YOU
I just bought a tach out of a 76 vette on e-bay. I had to change the faceplate because the numbers weren't green, and my redline was different, but that wasn't too tough. Don't know about hooking it up to an HEI though. I'm running an MSD6 and with that unit you do need to buy their adapter or you'll blow the tach circuit board (trust me on this one!)
Did the same thing on my 71. Tach needs power, ground and a wire to the coil and that's it. If the needle jumps around after this you need a tach filter.

I want to do that same conversion on Project RamJet! I purchased an electronic tach out of a 77 and want to swap face plates. Problem is, it looks like the plates were mounted differently. My old mech tach has the face plate mounted with small screws where the 77 tach looks like it was rivited on....plus the spacing on the mounting holes looks to be different. tell me more on how you swapped faceplates.
Correct. One is riveted, one bolted. I just drilled the rivets. The hole spacing is slightly different. I elongated the holes until they fit. Yes, on one side you can see the hole but once it is installed it is hard to see and not noticable at all. If you look for it you can see it.
