As my car is in dry-dock, I thought I would replace valve cover gaskets. Intake gaskets are leaking, too. What the heck...I'll replace the head gaskets for good measure while my hands are dirty.
My question is, while I have the top-end apart, what else should I check, look for and/or replace?
How much money do you have? If you are still stock (which your profile says you are) then definitely get your heads done or buy some better ones. It should not be too much for a basic valve job or some other simple mods. Maybe even an intake would be good while you are there. :yesnod:

Oohhh....I don't want to get sucked into that downward spiral. I've seen too many people on this forum spending their kids inheritance to tweak their cars.
I'm not interested in going faster...I just want to go!
Understood. But...Freshen up the heads while you have them off. It does not take long and the machine shop will discover any problems that need attention.
at least change the valve seals with the umbrella ones youll be $$$ ahead and happier when you do I did mine with the heads still on and am very happy as no more smoke on start up !
If you have the intake off then check the distributor shafts and bushings(if you still have the tach dist). They come apart easy, you can rebuild it and it will help you "stay on the road". You can get a Edelbrock intake at just about every swap meet around so if you're in FL then there must be a lot of them? Rebuild the carb or at least spray it down to clean it. replace the T stat and hoses if old,ign wires, cover gaskets, etc.
