I'm trying to figure out what warning light lens should be in our 68 gauge bezel, and I'm hoping you all can help.
In our 69, the layout is:
Upper Left: "Seat Belts" lens
Lower Left: "Push" button
Upper Right: "Door Ajar" lens
Lower Right: "Head Lamps" lens
Currently in our 68, the layout is:
Upper Left: "Low Fuel" lens
Lower Left: "Push" button
Upper Right: empty hole!
Lower Right: blocked off
Now, I know that the blocked off lower right indicates "early model year without wiper override".
My question is, what is the correct layout for both "early" and "late" 68 guage bezels?
Is the "Low Fuel" lens correct for 68, or should it be "Seat Belts", like on our 69?
What should be in the empty hole on both early and late?
What goes in place of the block on the late model, some lens or a button?
We are still trying to determine what has been "Bubbaed" on this bezel and what is correct!
Also still trying to determine if the car is in fact a "early" or "late" 68. What other factors will help, besides this wiper override on the gauge bezel?
Sorry, I have one, but the guage cluster and console were BBR (Bubba'd Beyond Recognition), and I haven't yet got as far along as you in reconstructing. Good luck!
On my '68 I have the Seat Belt Warning in the upper left along with the push button in the lower left. The upper right is Door Ajar. And I do not remember what is in the lower right.
I also do not know if my car is an early or late model. But I suspect that it is the Late model.

Ah yes, the joys of De-Bubbaing a car. We have been on that quest for over a year, and have found many amusing uses of non-stock part applications!
Good luck with your project.
on a early 68 that I restored some years ago it was:
upper left - seat belt lens
bottom left- push button
upper right- door ajar lens
bottom right- blocked off.
Hope this helps.

Thanks.
I had a feeling the "Low Fuel" lens was some Bubba-ized filler measure! :smash:
Maybe I'll start a new thread to get a list of the differences between early and late 68 differences. :chevy
There are two gauge bezels for '68's. Early did not have the wiper override lens, late ones did. I will check my reference book at home tonight to give you definitive info unless someone responds first.
This is a quote form Richard Price restoration guide The 68 is a smooth painted surface the 69 is textured. In the upper left portion of the center console instrument cluster housing there is a solid bar separating the seatbelt warning light from the button below Later replacement housings don't have this bar.
There is sapce for two more warning lights in the upper right portion of the housing In 68s assembled thru apx early March 1968 the additional squares say door ajar and low fuel. Some 68s assembled in this time frame have a spuare that says either door ajar or low fuel with the other square being blank. In 1968 cars assemled after mid March 1968 the upper right light reads door ajar and the lower reads wiper o'ride In 1969 cars the upper light kight reads door ajar and the lower reads headlamps
I have an early 68( Dec 67)it has the door ajar with a blank on the right side

I have an early '68 that has the "Low Fuel" lens too. My car was relatively unmolested overall so I doubt Bubba was there. Interesting thing is that the "Low Fuel" is blanked off and is non-functional. It's as if Chevy had contemplated adding a low fuel light but never went through with it and eventually deleted it from production. I've never seen anything in the '68 advertising literature or service manuals about it either. No low fuel light is shown on the wiring diagrams.

Hmm, now that is interesting. Maybe there was a Low Fuel light at some point.
I think I might have to pick up the NCRS tech book that MNJack mentioned in my other post, and see if there is any more detailed info in it.
