If a local auto parts can`t supply the lights, go to Http://www.airsuppliers.com Click on lights, then enter the part #. The part # is GE 4537, 13 volt lights. $14.95. Don`t worry, your charging system is 13.6 to 14.4 volts
Will they work! Of course they will. I been using and selling them for years. Besides the lumination power, they are a controversy where ever you go with other Vette owners scratching their heads as to what they are. Which is fun.
Those are the lights we have to replace the original low beams with here in Europe and I have never, ever had to mod a light housing like that to get them to fit, I dunno why you had to mod yours
Edit, I replied to the wrong post, I mean the hella lights.
Damn, I need to land me some of those kick azz aircraft lights :)
Thanks for the suggestion and link for the aircraft lights.
How hard would it be to put a set of these in all four positions????
/QUOTE]
Now that would be dangerous if you had 4 of them. Some idiot would run you off the road. You can properly only use them as brights as they are only a two wire brass screw connection. But you actually could, but I wont recommend it. Great for having that slow moving sucker that wont move over or the idiot thats coming at you with the brights on. One click of the dimmer switch and they immediately move over or dim their brights. I once had a SOB jump in behind me and give me his brights after I went past him in the 62 Vette. I went from 70 to a 100 with the 4.56 gear so quick he immediately quit as I left him in the dust. :D As to when I installed them in my 68, I dont recall any serious problem with the fiber optics if there even was one.
 and have fun!
How bright are the Hellas? I found an article on how to convert to HIDs on corvettefaq, are the Hellas the same thing requiring the ignitor, ballast and all that other stuff? The link for the HID conversion is http://www.corvettefaq.com/redir.asp?site=839 just in case anyone wanted to know. The link will make you download a word file to view it.
Twin_Turbo, the low beam housings were hitting in the back. They could be different as they were intended for a BMW. Could be that my housings are aftermarket. Anyway, it only took a few minutes each side with the dremel.
I did lose my fiber optics with the Hellas though. No biggie for me.
Are they brighter? yes, but the pattern is what's better -see link http://www.chrono.org/hella.htm
For you and others that have switched to the Hella 71456B housings, did you mount them in all four spots or just the outside two? What lamps did you go with?
One question on the 4537 a/c lamps, what type of housing do they use or are they the entire sealed unit?
Eddie the lights in my car are not stock however they modified the fiber optic connection tt and yes they are brighter than any others on the fiber optic panel.
Reading all the articles, seems to me Ironcross' solution is the simplest and least expensive. A matter of R&R the high beam bulbs and you should be done.
I dont use the Hella or whatever it`s called, I use the GE 4537 landing light in the high beam bucket that`s really just like a replacement "sealed beam", only it`s princpal use is in air planes. The only basic difference is that airplanes use brass screws on the terminals for safty as a connection instead of a push on light socket plug. TWO ways to make the connection. 1, two small wires with correct push on connectors from the light to the socket, or 2, unsolder the original connectors from the original factory sealed beam and resolder them to the landing light making it exactly as the old sealed beam and allowing me to use the cars factory plug and putting it all back together the same as stock. Either method is almost a drop in situation. It`s almost harder to explain than actually performing the switch. AND, they only cost 15 bucks each and don`t require a degree in engineering to do it. Plus THEY are the brightest. Hell, there used in airplanes
Caution note, They are not for everybody, It`s like riding a motorcycle with out a helmet. Which by the way is the way I ride. The Cops call me a Mavrick. Lets all
I have a closeup at this link, the picture is probably over 30 years old and grainy. The inside light is the aircraft unit. http://www.nitroalley.net/images/4.jpg
