Re: craftsman gear wrenches (Turbo-Jet)
these are cool!
do i go with the standard style or flex-head stlye? how durable is the joint?
reversible or non? can't one just flip the wrench over?
I have these in a kit from NAPA, and they look EXACTLY the same.
Yes you just flip them for differnet directions.
The flex head is a blessing and a pain in the rear at the same time. I like it because it gets into more places, but hate it when I am putting my 300 lbs behind it and it "folds" and I start ing.
I have never had a problem with them and really like the way they work.
Gear wrenches are great! I just bought a set of mastercraft stubbies.
I wouldn't worry about the quality of Craftsman, I have never had any problems with them, and they are 95% of my tools. Even if there is a problem, there is a great warranty.
I have the "flip over" ones from Craftsman and the reversable ones made by Duralast (found at autozone). I have to say that the Duralast ones are very good indeed and the only ones I use now.
I have a 3/8" S & K flex-head ratchet. The internal gear has plenty of teeth, so it's not far click to click when working in tight spaces. It is one of the most used tools I own.
You need to be careful with the non reversible type. I have heard a few stories where a guy backed a bolt all the way out, and could'nt get the wrench off due to space constraints. Not saying that it will happen to you, but It is possible.
I have two reversible Craftsman sets (sae & metric) and they are the greatest thing since the invention of the wrench! I use them more often than just about anything else in the toolbox now.
I think the flexible ones would also be useful in certain situations. However as was previously mentioned, I'd be careful when applying alot of pressure and then having the wrench fold over, busting your knuckles.
So my advise on which one's to get. Both. Never can have too many tools!
they are awesome but i HIGHLY recomend the reversable ones...
the reverse feature is very nice to have...you wont be sorry...
however, i think that if you buy the non reversable ones, you might wish you had bought the others...
I bought a set of these when they first came out, KD Tools is the one who frontiered the design and brought about the name "Gearwrench". I believe Sears sells this brand as well. I love them and would recommend them to anyone.
I have a whole drawer full of ratcheting wrenches. Some with angle heads, flex heads and the standard straight headsin both SAE and Metric sizes. I love them. I hardly use my standard wrenches and sockets now. I wonder what took so long to invent them. They save lots of time.
with the others. Get the reversable type. I still use the regular crescent wrenches from time to time though. The gearwrenches are a little larger and don't always fit in a tight spot.
