The pancake thing- try hanging out at fark.com for an explanation. (not a competitor I would hope so ok to mention here).

Splitting the forum into three or more sections would indeed make it clunky and time consuming to navigate. Two forums on the otherhand seems wise.

*General

*Performance

Let the restoration guys decide which to post in.

Simple and clean.

Doesn't this thread need to be moved to C3-Off Topic?

Ok, humour me for a minute and say that we're going to split it into 2 sections, Tech and General, like C4 & C5 have.

Where is the line drawn between Tech and General? It seems to me that most posts would belong in Tech and a minority would be in General. So much of what we post is Tech-related. Fixing this or that. Why is this or that happening. Which cam. Which heads. etc....

Tech & General should be fine. They can do it on the C4 & C5 forum so why couldn't that be done here?

Tech is real tech stuff so no carpets, wheels and whatever. It doesn't have the be outlined very specifically as to what is tech and what not, posts won't drop off very quickly and just the split alone will cure most of the problems.

OK, I'll give it a shot with the current 1'st page topics. I left the two posts about the split off as well as the Seat GP. I understand that different people will classify their posts differently, but I think the number of mis-classified posts will even out in the long run. I apparently have my settings to show 70 posts per page.

My findings, in short:
General: 31
Tech: 36

Even if I'm off by 5 posts to the "General" forum, that would still put it at a 26/41 (or 39%/61%) which would give about a 2 - 3 day turnover on the first page of the C3 General Forum. Hardly enough to cause a forum to go stale.

Here is how I classified them. I, so here they are:

I say that's a damn good example, I'd categorize it like that too...and look almost 50/50 so we wouldn't have to be worried about 1 forum being next to empty

That's pretty good Chris. Thanks for taking the time to do that. I wouldn't have guessed that the numbers were that close.

This topic has come up many times before, and each time, there has been an overall opinion that maintaining a single section was the best option.

At this time, the best I can say is that we'll consider it. There are pros and cons to a split to say the least.

One thing I have been thinking of, and this isn't specifically in response to Chris' post, is what about a FAQ section? Something much like the corvettefaq website, but here on the forum. Granted, I've been here for 5 years, but a LOT of topics come up somewhat frequently. Having a compilation of those in a separate section, labeled as such, might help out. It'd be possible to maintain the section to add relevant information to old posts as necessary. I'm thinking more about a section of locked posts, but I'm not sure that would be the best way.

As I posted earlier the reason I don't go to the other forum as often as this one is because they split theirs.

An FAQ section just for the us C3'rs, would be great, no one hardly goes to the tech section, and the search is still frustrating.

A maintained FAQ would sure cut down on the repeat posts.
Yes lock the threads, and then maybe we can get the members with the best solution to re-write the topic to be like a tech page, and then include the best replies to top it off.

Ultimate proof that we need to split is found here:

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/showthread.php?t=863574

as far as splitting being the death of the forum, a lot of knowledgeable people have already left and I fear it's because of all the crap posted that makes the forum like struggling through a jungle.

How did my post about my car not starting wind up on page 3 in only 24 hours? Plus, I only had 1 response and 20 something views. Usually My post lingers around the front page for a few days before fading and I usually have at least 4 responses within the first hour
Sounds like he needs to start paying members to post on his threads when no one wants to jump in a TTT it for him...

Heck I'll TTT it for him for the next 3 days for a buck a day. $$$$

ok i'm getting that you don't have much need for any serious tech help on your car and see the forum more as a social site. Correct me if i'm wrong but the most technical thing you have done to yours to date was to change a burned out tail light bulb?

Replaced ported intake manifold.
Re-tuned CFI system.
Polished rims.
Complete tune up W/wires thru motor mounts.
Replaced all weatherstripping.
Re-bent rear hatch struts.
Found replacement gas struts for hatch.
New radiator.
Electric antennae repaired.
And yes, new tail light bulbs.

I have tried to add useful information to every post I can. and yes I try to have some fun too.
I have spent hours looking for parts when the new members (& some old members) come asking for them, because I seem to do good with web searches.
I also read most technical posts, I don't always reply, because I have only owned an 82, but it sure is fun learning what I can about the other 13 years of C3's out there.

But what I have learned is that I really love figuring out how to fix my own problems with research, then if someone comes up with the same problem, I can jump in with what I learned.

But I also like to have FUN !!!

Guys don't fight, Dawg we all know that you like to spice up the meatballs around here with your posts but it IS kinda sad that that guy's question dropped off the page 3 isn't it? there's hardly any denying there. Also, constantly bringing it to the top and no one replying must mean that it's dropping off rather quickly. It's not like he posted a question that no one here could answer.

Check the cable from the battery to the starter.
I read his post the day he made it, and I also read the reply quoted above, That was a pretty good answer, and until the guy checks out that suggestion, then adds to his post that he did or didn't find it, then what else is there????

I don't think this is a good post to base your splitting the forum up with. he had plenty of opportunity to TTT it himself with more questions. Why no one responded to it is going to never be answered, it's just the way the forum crumbles.

Just the opposite for me. I come here MUCH less than I used to. In fact, I pretty much only come here when I want something or have some free time at work.

Honestly, I get 99.6% of what I NEED from the search. I would LIKE to post more in reply to other threads, but having to weed through the non-tech stuff puts me off. I used to spend my luch hour reading and posting on pretty much a daily basis with no problem keeping up. Now, I can't do it and just find myself frustrated sorting through stuff I'm not interested at all and not making it back to where I left off.

I do admit, though, the "preview" thread helps in this regard.
