What makes you think they had a "check engine light" in 82? I have no idea when that little item became standard, but I certainly think of it as a "modern" thing.
CEL's are part of emissions systems... I doubt the C3's had them. Fr'instance... my 04 Saab kept throwing CEL's because the darn gas cap clutch was shot and wouldn't lock down the cap. No seal, no proper pressure - CEL comes on.
If you mean the light itself, it is on the center gauge cluster. Look at either sideof the top row of gauges, do you see the small squarish looking depressions, one on each side? This is where it should light up. I thing there is a seat belt light, a check engine light, and oil pressure dummy light, and a brake light I think. I don't remember what all the lights are as my 82 is heavily modded and they don't work anymore, but when they did that is where they were.
DMONSVETTE
Thats where I thought it should be, but mine has no light there and no lettering, the seatbelt one above it is still there....I don't know who the heck owned this thing before me, but the poor car has been through a lot
