Default headlight stays up

One of my headlights won't retract when I turn the **** off. Is there a way to get it down without forcing it?

Thanks, Ma rk

From what I was reading they default to the upright position when there is a malfunction in the system. Try disconnecting the vacuum hoses leading to the accuator and plug them up. Then try from underneath to pull them down. Check the tech sections for diagnosing the problem.

Good Luck

The relays "default" to the open position if vacuum is lost at their control port (the little brass nipple). But the same line feeds vacuum to both relays' control ports t-ing off right before. Hence if one light is closed, you probably have vacuum at both control ports.

So start at the actuator. Pull off the rear hose. Is it sucking hard? If so, you have a bad actuator.

If not, check the port at the relay that hose plugs into. Is it sucking? If so, you have a bad hose.

If not, you either have a bad relay or a bad hose going to the relay.

Pull off the middle hose of the 3 large hoses going to the relay. Sucking? If so, bad relay.

Aaaaaannnnd since the other side is working, that pretty much eliminates a bad tank, and/or no vacuum at the tank, etc.

Thanks for the help. I'll start with what you suggested.

Look under the actuator. You will see a long link. This is an overcenter type lok. Pull it down by hand and you can close the light by hand since it will be unlocked. To trouble shoot, switch hoses with the relays to see which is bad. If the same light won't close the light is at fault but if the other light now won't close then the relay is at fault.

If you have a bad control valve you can operate both lights with the good one until you can get a replacement. Just buy a couple feet of vacuum hose and a couple of plastic tee's. Remove the upper and lower hoses from the good control valve, cut a couple short pieces of hose, add the tee's and reconnect both actuators to the tee's.
