Default Comp cam question/recommendation, again.

Sorry if this is a dupe, I know there are a probably a bunch of threads on this topic. I did a search, but alot of the threads came up as related to c5's. So, I thought I would go ahead and ask again. Also, I posted this over in c2 as well, but thought I would share with my c3 brotherin'.

I wanted to see if anyone has some experience with the latest Extreme Energy cams from Comp. I am looking at making a decision on a new cam for my engine rebuild in the next few days. The engine builder has given me a few options, and suggestions, so I thought I would share them here and see what everyone thinks.

The motor is a 427 rebuild, with a stock 435 intake, and 69' L89 Aluminum Heads. The block has been bored .030 over, and we are looking at running 10:1 compression with JE Pistons.

If I want to go a little wild on the cam, he is suggesting the XE284H Hydraulic Flat Tappet cam. Its range is 2,300-6,500 rpm with 284 intake and 296 exahaust duration, and .574/.578 valve lift. This is expected to be a rough idle, which may be fine for my expected use. I am planning on weekend cruiser driver, and I usually drive fairly hard. I am just curious "how ruff" this cam may be. Has anyone had any experience with this particular cam? If so, can you provide some feedback?

Another option is Xtreme Energy Hyd Flat Tappet cam, just below this one. It is the XE 274H. It is said that this cam is a little milder with the idle but still very strong mid range power. The range is 1,800 to 6,000 rpm with 274 intake duration, and 284 exhaust. The valve lift is .552 int/.555 exh. Does anyone have any experience and feedback on this cam?

As far as the rest of the drivetrain, 3.55 rear with a standard M21 trannie.

Thank you everyone for your input and help here.

LOL, that is a loaded question with this builder. If I had to guess from our conversations, around $2.5-3.5k with the work I needed done on the L89 heads. I am keeping my fingers crossed it stays in this range.

The Comp XE series has very extreme ramps. I have had two flat tappet cams wipe (both XE series). I believe nastee383 has had the same problem. I know that these are the latest craze and have lot's of magazine write-ups.

My solution: I swapped to a Crane hydraulic roller setup. I had a Crnae flat tappet previously and had no problems.

Just my $.02.
