Default electric problem HELP

my 68 has a short on circuit breaker........CLK LTR / / CTSV BAT 20amp. What is this circuit? When i disconnect the neg post of the battery and put a test light from post to terminal then pull the fuse on this circuit I still get a faint light in the test light and the buzzer behind the voltage regulator will still buzz when contact is made at the battery post and terminal w/ test light. I can push the door switch in and the buzzer will stop and test light will go out. I have look at the switch and wire from switch up to the main harness in the door and all that seems fine. Now to add a real twist when i pull on the head light switch the test light goes on bright, and this is with the door switch in / out ( is my head light switch bad?) everything seems to be working, but the voltage meter is pegged @ 40+ while car is running with head lights on.And the battery is good. it has been tested.(so im still not driving this Dang thing yet) I am really lost on this and its driving me nucken futs So please any elect gurus out here in Vette land that could lend some advise, it would be greatly appreciated. Keep em flags flying
Thanks

CLK= clock
LTR= cigar/cig lighter
CTSY= interior curtysey(sp) lights

Sounds like you may have some crossed wires or a ground problem.

PS: the light switch should not have any affect on this circuit

Certainly could be a ground problem. The grounding strap locations are hood surround for the headlights, driver's side rocker channel to frame on the front edge of the channel, frame to block near the starter, (that's the main one) and driver's side rear cross member to tailights.

You are not using the test light properly. Of course it's going to light because you are making the circuit through the light. Suggest getting a schematic and just start tracing through things one wire at a time on that circuit until you find your short. Try the easy things first, like the socket for the Cig Ltr.

Reading your post again, sounds like maybe more then one problem. What is the voltage at the battery while the car is running and charging? Will the 40 amp charging indication stop when you remove the CigLtr fuse? Are you sure the ammeter gauge is good? Are you getting a battery drain when the car is not running?

Thank you, I did also have a voltage problem, it was at 17 volts when checked with meter,I have changed the voltage regulator and now have voltage back in line at 13 to 14 volts even with turning on head lights. but really need too dig into the grounds. I have added a ground strap from engine to frame at the starter
looks like im going to have to track down some wiring on the clock/ cig lighter
I would like to thank the two whom replyed.
