I have recently changed my stock 1980 L-48 to include an Edelbrock Performer manifold, cam, and 600 cfm carb.
How can I mount my throttle return spring in a manner that will not get stock on the carb linkage. I had this happen on a cruise last night and it was not very fun. The pedal would only depress so far. Where is the best place for the spring? Any pics or your setups and or advice would be excellent. Right now the spring bracket is mounted the taller bolt on the water neck.
I would like to remedy this before leaving for Carlisle next Thursday.
I have no idea, Can you get help from their tech staff? Can you slide a small piece of plastic tubing over it to keep it from snagging? Stuck open throttles are not that much fun.
If you look very closely, you can see I pull from the opposite direction. I mounted an L-bracket to the bolt hole location that normally holds the coil. (I mounted my coil on the firewall)
I could have used the provision on my throttle cable bracket but the tension wasn't enough. Hope this helps.
This was actually the stock setup on my center Holley. Bad part about this setup is the trottle cable works against the spring using the trottle shaft and carb body as a fulcrum/pivot. They wear out fairly quickly. I added a forward spring to mine with an 'L' bracket mounted to the thermostat housing to balance the spring pressure on the shaft.

I am using the L bracket on the water neck now. the bracket is too short and does not allow the spring to work without catching on the linkage. maybe a longer bracket would help? also, the spring is not in line with the linkage. it's at about a 30 to 45 degree angle.
Remedy = we measure to see where a new L bracket needs to end up. Then I have my Dad make one for you out of aluminum. It will look sweet and work even sweeter! Swing by tonight if you can.
why on the water neck? My springs are currently in the stock location, but they used to be hooked to a bracket (which is still there) located on one of the intake manifold bolts that is perfectly lined up with the throttle cable. Can't you line it up?

I'll have to take a closer look and see if I can re-use the old bracket.
Only problem with that is that you're using a manifold bolt and can be hard to get to with the water hose on. I personally like pulling from the rear, hehehe, looks cleaner IMO. But whatever works. Good luck!
