If you have never pulled an engine, I would suggest you spend a few bucks and buy the pamplet "How To Rebuild Your Small Block Chevy" from your local Barnes and Noble or such. Great tips and hints on pulling and installing the engine. It is well worth the money, even if you never use it to rebuild your engine. It is chockful of things to do to prep the engine prior to removal and again prior to the installation.

unbolt the front u-joint and the leave the output shaft in the transmission. This will keep trans fluid from making a heck of a mess. I just stuck my motor and trans back in together and didn't even take the back u-joint out or the crossmember.

Just take the drive shaft out. It will take about 15 min. It's tight under there and you wouldn't want the drive shaft to jam up while you are pushing and pulling.
