Is it pretty much impossible to obtain build sheets for anything earlier than 82, when the Bowling Green Plant opened? Specifically I am looking for numbers and spes. on a '72..
The build sheet is your key. I know because, like you, I wanted to know the particulars on my car. And with the privacy laws as they are today, the state DMV's cannot divulge information regarding who owned the car or what dealer delivered it. You have to reach up from the bottom of the car over the top of the tank. Mine was on the driver side and was in rough shape and came out in two pieces. However, it was yellowed but sort of legible, enough that I could read the vin and most of the zone and dealer number that it was delivered by. When I found the sheet, I had the spare tire carrier out and the car had non-original side pipes, which meant no mufflers. Hope this helps. Good luck
I was able to get my build sheet from the left side of the gas tank, from the bottom and by removing the gas filler cover assy. I could then reach it with a aprts grabbers and remove it in large chunks, and reassemble it. I was abel to read quite a bit of it. The first thing I did was copy it zoomed and in different intensities. The coolest part was finding the dealer it was delivered to. If you have the back tailight seciton off of the car you could get it real easy.
Before I bought my vette, I called GM Canada to do a search on the VIN since it wouldn't come up on the DMV computers. It seems that the car was not registered sinc 1982. Anyway, GM sent me the following along with the spec's on a 76 Corvette and places where I could buy parts for this car. The sheet below is specific to my car. Oh yeah, it was $C45 but for the info I received, well worth it.

The documentation is only available for Canadian delivered Vettes from GM Canadia.
Apart from on top of the tank you might find it as suggested behind the dash, in a trailing arm, anywhere a worker might have stashed it to get rid of it.
I found build sheets for my Bonneville under the tar paper on the passenger floor when I was doing the steering conversion and on top of the fuel tank when doing some repairs. With the one on the tank there was another one for a Catalina wagon.

I reached mine through the filler cover. I first used a spatula to loosen it up, then pulled it out with a pair of tongs. I got it out with only tearing off a small piece of a corner.

Desparately need some help
I need the assistance of the members of this board to assist me with some research I am doing for our local Corvette club with regard to build sheets.
It would be an enormous help to us and I am sure many others if we could get members to post (as complete and clear as possible) photographs of their build sheets to be used as a reference along with where they located the build sheet on the vehicle.
We have several members including myself who are specifically interested in the 1981 Corvette both St. Louis and Bowling Green production.
I greatly look forward to your assistance with this project.

With the current explosion of EBAY scams I feel that you may not get many responses right now.
If you posted more information about yourself and your club it may improve your chances.

Build Sheet Research

Thanks for your reply! Although I wasn't aware of all of the Ebay scams, I would deeply regret any scam resulting from members posting their build sheets on this forum in reference to my research request.
That said, neither myself or anyone in our club are the type of people who would engage in such a scam, However, I do believe we can acomplish the original goal of the post by simply obscuring the vehicle VIN # from the build sheet as there exists no other data on the sheet which would be subject to being compromised.
Again, I look forward to any help the members of this forum might offer with this project.

You may know but you can get the build sheets for 81 BG built Corvettes. I order one for my 2000 but have had no luck with finding one squirrelled away in my 78.
