My Mechanic recently tuned my base 72 conv. 350. He changed the rochester carb with an identical one to see if He could get it to stop from running rich at idle but it did not change. Other than that everything checked out O.K. Plugs, points, etc. sounds and accelerates great. My question and his is were these engines noted for running more rich back then? Can the mufflers or grade of gas cause this. Thanks for any input.
Also, he should hook up a CO meter and see just how rich it really is. Without catalytic converters the exhaust will smell pretty bad. There's a sticker in the eng comp stating the amount of CO you should have. Probably 1% or so.
My '79 had a smell strong gas fumes during idle and right after engine shutdown and several here suggested I change the vapor cannister.
I did and that solved my problem.
If the engine doesn't emit black smoke during acceleration I would think the carb was set about right.........
