The speedomter stopped working on my '69 a few months ago. As I understand it, either the cable is bad or the gear in the tranny needs replaced. Is this correct? Does anyone have advice on how best to determine the exact cause?
Prior to the failure, the speedometer needle used to bounce quite a bit at lower speeds.
Could also be the speedo "head". Disconnect the cable from the trans. Put the end in your drill and spin the drill. Don't remember clockwise vs. counterclockwise.
If the speedo works, the problem is in the trans gear.
If the speedo doesn't work, it could be the cable or the speedo head.
Disconnect the speedo cable from the back of the speedometer, spin it and see if it's broken, or one of the squared ends is rounded off. Hope this helps. Chuck
