Mine were weleded into my floorboards when I purchased my Corvette. I never new why they were there. Is this a common rust problem on Stingrays? I'd show you pictures but I'm still in Kuwait. I'll take photos for you when I get home if you can wait that long.
I have an 80 which also has the metal floor pan. from 75 on up all vettes had them to work with the increased heat of the catalytic converter. Before that they were just fiberglass!
My 80 leaked when it rained and I had rust but turned out it was just on the surface so I didn't need to add any additional metal. Do you have rust through on yours?
I agree that even with the stock floor the metal is very thin. You could cut some 4 inch square 1/16 inch steel and bolt it in at the corners with 3/16 or 1/4 inch bolts so that where the seat bolts it has move surface area. The plates would have to be on the bottom to stop the seat from pulling out of the floor pan. My 80 does have a channel at the front bolts underneath but this is flimsy also.
