Default Rebuilt or Replace?

I have a Alternator that correct for a 1971 (1100934A - 37A), but mine's a 1970 with air (that presently broken) that should have a 61 Amp alternator.

Do I rebuilt the wrong alternator (bad bearings) and use it since it's a vette part? Then later fine correct Alternator someday.

Or do I trash wrong alternator (use it for core deposit, $15 value) and buy a rebuilt lifetime warranty alternator from Advance Auto?

How about you sell your numbers-matching-for-somebody-else alternator on eBay for $40 and buy an Advance Auto alternator to get you going down the road now. Then worry about finding your numbers-matching alternator (on eBay?) later and use Lars' rebuild instructions to get it going?

Ralph, I put new bearings in mine as well as the internals. Has been working great. Not too big of a deal, just make sure if you do install the rectifier bridge that you put all of the insulators back in or you will have an alternator that will not work. Ask me how I found this out.

It only takes about an hour to rebuild it, get the parts and rebuild it

Tore mine apart yesterday to check out a low voltage issue while the forum was down. Amazing what you can acomplish if you step away from the "square headed girlfriend" once in a while.

All my internals that could be checked with a volt meter checked out good and the alternator does put out the juice when I did the full field test so I have diagnosed my low voltage problem as a bad regulator. Less than $9 later and we should have it back in the car tomorrow.

I would repair your old alternator if it were mine. The job is quick and relatively painless. When you are done, you will know what is in there and you will also have aquired a new skill to add to your list.

I would replace with a Delco-Rebuilt, Advance carries them. You can step up the amperage a little if you like.

By the way, there is 1 71 alternator that is very hard to come by, if you have that one the core is probably worth quite a bit. Ask this question on the NCRS site and see if you have the rare one.

78whtshark,

If you are going to replace it, let me know because I am interested in buying it from you for my 71.

Thanks,

Mike
