'78 4Spd. New Goodyear GTll's. 75k miles. I get a consistant vibration that is felt on the gearshift when going anything over around 70mph. I feel that there may be many causes for this but what are the most common causes?? It doesn't appear to be coming from the front end. Any thoughts? Thanks
vibrations are usually caused by something out of balance. That could be a driveshaft, half shaft, tires, anything. Could also be coming from the differential itself. Can you provide a more detailed description of the vibration including exactly at what speeds and weather it goes away under acceleration, or goes away when you take it out of gear etc.?
I had a 71 that did that after I put on a set of Goodyear GT's. I solved it with an on car true and balance job. Not one tire was really true and one was almost 1/4" out of round. It was smooth at any speed he got finished. It cost $16 per wheel and took a couple of hours. Of course a bent rim would also cause that but in my case it was the tires. Goodyear tires seem to have problems in beig round.
I had similar vibration, but not every time. It turned out to be a worn out pilot bushing and would mis-align at times when clutch applied. It could be a ton of things though. Start cheap and easy first, and good luck.
Thanks for the input. The vibration is not felt in the steering wheel nor the seat, just the gear shift at around 70mph. and over. Not sure about out of gear, I'll check. Does not feel like a normal tire vibration or front end problem, just checked balance etc. Maybe a balance with half-shafts etc.???
