Default 1968 427 390HP Convertable Value? Help

Hi

I am new to this Forum as a member ---but I have been reading along quite some time --- I need help to establish and estimated value on the following car , I would like to buy . Please note that I can do all o0f the restoration myself as I have restored two C3's that I now own . I can do the engine rebuild / Paint also

1968 Covertable 427 390 HP 4 speed ---
1. Hard Top and soft top
2. Setting outside for the last 6 years ---no broken glass
3. Body is straight--except for 14'' slash in Fiberglass by drivers rear tire ---- (half shaft busted loose)
4. Needs interior seat leather and Carpet
5. Full frame off resto needed
6. Engine is a 69 427 390 from a vette ---I have ran all the block and heads numbers
7. Vin # shows it should be a 427 390 HP car
8. Engine not started since 1987

The owner is a truck driver who is home about 4 hrs a week -- I am about $2000 away from what he is asking

Help!! I cannot sleep as I have wanted a 68 Convertable for some time ! I am really not interested in making it a fully original car.

Thanks

I bought mine in great shape last year
427 /390 4 speed close ratio
Hard top only
Only needed new bushings and some wiring fixes, but runs like a bad ***
and the frame was excellent.

No AC
No PS
No PB
No PW
No nuthin'

Just a driver and non matching car
$14k - fair I believe, actually would have paid $17k for this one

You need to check a few things to verify this is an original Big Block car---the vin doesn't indicate the engine option.
Look for a 5600 rpm redline on the tach(5300 is base 327, 6000 is 350 HP 327, and 6500 is L71/89/88).
Also look for factory rear sway bar and caps on the differential u-joints(not U straps).

Good luck.

Greg

Thanks for the info !!! I will check the tach and verify ----- But as is ---- what would be a good estimate of the value ???

The owner was asking $6000 and I have now offered him $3800----- this guy actually doesn't even have a phone so I have to call his daighter to relay the Mesages--------- and the car is setting in the field beside his driveway and evertime it rains I cry !!
I think if this becomes mine I will have to name her "DEVIL" as she has not let me sleep for some time now .

Keep the feedck coming on estimated value ---all opinions are welcome !

Thanks

Why lose sleep over it. I've shot pool and paid rent from you guys. Split the diff % wise, given the $'s it going to take to make her roadable. The more gamesmenship the more bullsmen****. You'll do the car right, an investment in the ARTS.

:
One way to look at is to start with value of what it would be worth if it was in good condition, say $18k. Look over the car and start adding up the cost of the parts to get it there. You know that there willbe be some items that will be overlooked so deduct a few thousdand to be on the safe side.
Personally, I think your offer seems to be in the ball park; $6k for a car that needs considerable work may not be worth it. it almost sounds like a money pit. Once you start there is no turning back. Is this something you really want?

If the body and frame are in good shape, 6000 may not be too bad, especially if you can do most of the work yourself. Even if you put another 15000 in it, you shouldn't be in over you head. I just bought a 68 coupe 327 350 hp for $2900 totally disassembled, NOM. I thought it may have been a 427 car, but found out here some things to look for: 427 had 7 leaf springs, 327 had 9. Fan shroud is two-piece on 427, one piece on 327. Tach is 6500 on 427, 6000 or less on 327. If it has an expansion tank for the radiator, it was a 327 350. If you can find a copy of Vette Vues Fact book for the 68-72, there are a ton of other hints. If you decide to pass on this, let me know. I know of several guys that would take it.

I recently sold a '69 435hp coupe, partially DISASSEMBLED with NOM and NO tri-power carbs or intake for $7000. Pay the man his $6000 and get to work.

$3800. You lucky dog. I wish mine was that cheap when I started.

Sounds like a good deal. It should definately part out for way more than that.
