I'm in the process of doing a body-off chassis rebuilt.
What techniques have many of you used to smooth the surface of your frame? Mine has pitting along the top rails along the rockers and along some of the crossmembers. Its not real deep, but deep enough to be seen after primer and epoxy.
I didn't bother doing the frame, but I filled my windshield frame
in with a skim coat of JBweld. It worked well. Also, POR-15 has
a paste in a tube that will fill nicely. Not the POR-putty. I tried that
with poor results for filling pits.
Looks like a few more coats and a lot more sanding. I am not sure why you didn't see this before painting. I assume you didn't sand the primer before hitting it with paint. The one nice thing about primer is hat it usally dries fast and sands easier than paint. One thing I found good to do is to use one color of base primer and then use a different color for build up. You will then know when you are getting close to metal when you sand down to the base color.

I have not painted the frame yet. I threw a couple of quick coats over some areas to get an idea of how it would look. I think that a combination of high-build primer and filler is going to do the trick.
Thanks for all of you help. I should have pictures of the chassis in a couple of weeks.
I would suggest visiting a body supply store, and asking for some Fiberall by the U-pol company. This stuf is amazing. It is hard as nails, literally. IF the pits are very deep. You will need to go to the metal. FIberal is very hard, waterproof, and can be shaped into anything. It comes in a large gun, and the hardener is pre measured. If the pits are not deep, I would suggest the same as above. You can use a high build primer, probably better known as a surfacer.
