My 78 has had the A/C gutted and I'm in the process of putting everything back. Do I need to use the exact model condenser that was in the car (corvette condenser) or can I use another GM application if it will fit. If I can (use something besides OEM), any recommendations on what other condensers will work (impala, caprice, truck, etc).
Good question. I removed my condensor and had the radiator shop guy clean it and check it for leaks and then re-installed it. I would think the condensor is somewhat of a custom fit for our Vetts but I am not sure. Will be insterested in hearing what others have to say about this.
One thing for sure, if you get a condensor with more fins per inch you will have a cooler A/C system then the stock 78 condensor. But will it fit ??
Don't know for sure, but the stock cond. has lines that stay in the same plane. All the funny angles are with the other lines. Might go look at a 67-72 Chevy truck cond. It is similar in size I believe. Honestly, if it was me I'd bite the bullet and get a new one for a Vette. Try your discount stores it's only $161 from Advance for a correct fit.

The Corvette has the compressor & condensor inlet & outlet on the correct side (right or pass.). Many do not. A mid 70s Chevy van condensor (connections on the correct side) might work.
Thanks - don't know a thing about A/C. Get the impression bigger is better..so I'll look for that in a condensor. I think the advice to get the right application is good, especially since it reall isn't that expensive to have the fit and capacity.
