Default Electrical help please

My 72 has a crate 454 and I am trying to repair a butchered harness. Today's issue is my alternator. The plug that holds the wires marked terminal 1 and terminal 2, which one is supposed to go to the battery terminal? Mine was hacked off at the plug, now I am smoking the wire that connects to the battery by way of a fusable link. Any ideas?

PAINLESS !!!!

I got one for my last project car and I was soooo glad. I probably saved 12 hours labour, most likely more, by doing that. I was also able to do it all myself with total confidence it was 100% correct.

I found a website that had a schematic for a GM alt. the terminal marked T2 is connected to the heavy red lead from the back of the alt. Mine were switched. One more problem solved
