Driving my vette tonight and I was making a turn when all the sudden tires started making noise and smelling like burning rubber. I thought nothing of it, but decided to pull over and check it out when a little ways down the road (not even 1/2 mile) the rear left tire was smoking. When I looked at it the left rear wheel is bent inward. I'm affraid it might be the axle, but don't really know and don't know how to tell for sure. I left the car in the parking lot where it was cause I didn't want to drive it any further and I'm going back to check it out in the morning, but I figured I'd post here and see if anyone could help me out. Anyone have any idea what could have caused this, how to tell for sure whats wrong with it, what to do about it? I need to get back to Atlanta from Columbia on Tuesday so I'm kinda in a hurry, but I'm affraid I might not be able to make the trip in my vette. :'( Please give me any help you can as soon as possible so I know what I'm looking at tomorrow and what I can possibly do with it. Post here or e-mail me at soccer794@aol.com Thanks
Sounds most likely a bearing failure, need to jack it up and move it around to see where the failure is. First thing, look at your strut rod and see if it is intact. If it is the adjustable type the nuts may have backed off (common problem from what I have read here). If the strut rods is ok, jack it up and move the wheel around and see what is moving around back there. Good luck
You said it was toed in at the bottom. It sounds like a broken "C" clip on the differential half-shaft yoke. This would cause the yoke to start coming out of the diff. The half-shaft is part of the suspension attachment. It could be the bearing but I would think it would toe in at the top and the tire would be closer to the wheel well lip if this were the case. Let us know what it is.
