Default Headlight question

How are the headlight actuators and valves attached to the front end of my '77? I've been examining them, but can't quite figure out how they come out. Can they be removed with the hood in place? Thanks for any help - I can't remember seeing anything about this in the shop manual, but my memory may just be bad. If it's in there, just point me to the right page.

They're just bolted on. Once you've removed the bolts, there are two ways to get them out, either through the front grill space (remove the grills of course) or through the space between the hood and the nose. Second one is simpler but takes a little finesse.

First, put a layer of masking tape on about the first foot of your hood at the center, and on the edge of engine bay opening opposite to protect the paint. Unbolt the cans. With the hood closed, move one the cans to the middle. Set it down there. Open the hood. Pull the can out through the gap between the hood and the nose section. Be very careful of the paint--it's a tight fit, but with a little turning it will come on out. Close hood & repeat.
