Anyone know if these mufflers are "straight through" designs? They say "turbo style", not sure what that means. Or anyone know anything about their flow?
I run Edelbrock RPM 3" mufflers that are a straight though design.Flow like crazy, but more like $85 a piece. Not too loud under light throttle, but sound like straight pipes under the gun.
No kidding? I saw the claim of 20+ horsepower more than a leading brand on their site, but I was skeptical.
That is almost too good to be true!
I cant remember where I saw it but I remember seeing flow results from a credible source not too long ago. But there are other things to consider like how long will they hold up...I have blown out several sets already.
We knew our Summit Turbo mufflers would perform before we cranked up the dyno. But when one of these mufflers produced 21 horsepower more than a leading competitor's muffler--well, we were floored. Made with free-flowing large diameter tubing, they give you a deep performance tone without being too loud. Features include roll-seamed end caps, aluminized external construction, and spot-welded inner baffles. Best of all, they're 100 percent American made.
I say:
Who was the leading competitor? Which muffler of theirs? Roll seams = cheap and leaky, prone to rust. Aluminized is nice, but mufflers rust from the INSIDE out, so an aluminized EXTERIOR does nothing. Spot welded baffles, huh? How else would they attach them? Glue?
I also say: Cheap is cheap. There is an old saying among manufacturers...Cheap, fast, good: pick two.
You will be fine w/ the Summit Turbo mufflers- very good- just not as good as Dynomax.
Do you mean sound, performance, or both? If sound, are the Summits louder or quieter than Dynomax super turbos? I want a good muffler, but I don't want Flowmaster sound and don't want Dynomax Super Turbo quietness.
Brettmc--those look interesting. ANy idea how loud they are? They say they are not glasspacks, but I don't think I want anything even REMOTELY close to glasspacks.
Looking for good flow, cheap price, and not too loud
They say "turbo style", not sure what that means.
Thanks!
"Turbo" style refers to the muffler design's origin in turbocharged Corvairs. They were light, cheap, and they flowed better than most everything else. Once the word got out, the aftermarket got into the act with improved versions.

Performance- HP & TQ. Loudness would also be a performance aspect of a muffler. Yes, the Dynomax was not as loud as the Summit turbo.
Something else to consider is that a turbo muffler at the end of the exhaust like a C3 or a car w/ exhaust cut off before the rear end would be louder than same w/ tailpipes.
So I guess it is not a "straight through" design and it cannot possibly hope to compete with a straight through design in flow rates?
Exhaust is complex, you might be surprised, actually they can make more HP.
I have a set of the "fully welded" version of the summitt turbo mufflers that, I would like to sell. The set I have are the offset inlet, center outlet. If it were not for the offset, it would be STRAIGHT thru. Other than the shift for the offset, I can look straight thru from one end to the other.
The set I have, have never been bolted on the car. I slipped them into place and fired the engine. They are a little louder than I wanted. I ended up going with the Dynomax super turbos. So I will make you a great deal on these barely used Summitt mufflers.

They are LOUD!! After all, they are race muffs. Since they are at the end of the exhaust pipe, they don't really sound like glasspacks. If you put some tailpipe after them, they might. They flow real good. I had to rejet my carb after removing the Flowcrappers and putting the Bullets on so I think I lost all backpressure. Let me remind you that they are LOUD. They don't resonate like Flowcrappers but they are LOUD. Also, they are LOUD.
