4 speed to auto conversion question

Default 4 speed to auto conversion question

Hi, im sure its been asked but i couldnt find it in the archives? anywho i want to swap my 76 auto to a 4spd,,,i already have all the parts needed, my main question is with the tranny crossmember,,,,,how much difference is there? i know the 4spd one is a weld in and the auto is a bolt it (i cut the crossmember out of the parts car)but which one do i need to use? how much of a difference is there? thx!!!

Use the removeable crossmember. The guys who do the std -> auto conversion usually have to either cut their crossmember and fabricate plates to bolt it on or make a whole new crossmember. The auto -> std conversion is by far the easier to do. Depending on the transmission you use you may have to play with the tranny mount but generally it's not a big problem.

I'm planning to do the same thing with my 79, only using a 6-speed if I can find one for the right price.

What are you going to do with the 4spd parts that you're changing out? I have a 76 that I have been thinking of changing from auto to standard.
