Default 69’ rear end

I have the rear end out of this ’69. How can you tell if this needs to be rebuilt? Can you tell without opening it up? I measured the in/out movement where the half shafts connect and the movement is .040” on one side and .045” on the other. Is this too much? It has 80,000 miles on it. Should I just clean it up, paint and stick it back in or would it be wise to open it up and do other checking?

Open it up and look at the stub shafts. The movement you say is not much but I would look at it anyway. You have done the hard part of getting it out. Now just remove the cover.

Okay... the cover is off. What are the key places I should be checking? I see what looks like two spline shafts with retaining clips on the ends. It almost looks like those retaining clips are what would wear and give the .040 and .045 movement. What do the retaining clips ride against and do they wear more than the retaining clips themselves?

What else should I be checking in here?

Thanks for the help!!

It just hit me that the wear to look for must be at the very end of the shafts where they ride against that perpendicular shaft between them. Is this correct?
