those are huge top quality 6 ton jack stands and they have like a 12 inch base. they are rock solid even at that height. After i jack up a car i walk around to all four corners and try and shake the car....if i can't shake it, and i mean a zero tolerance for shake then i feel ok to get underneath it. in fact for normal work i only have to move those up to about the second/third notch to work underneath it (approx 22"). the wand for the pressure blaster was about 3' long and in order to clean the trans tunnel/floor boards i had to go to "super height"

I plan on using rustoleum glossy black for the frame, not sure what colors/product i'm going to use onthe fender wells and especailly on the fiber glass fire wall any suggestions?? thks bob

I bought my son his first craftsman tool box when he was 5. I bought him a few Craftsman tool each year for Christmas (decent tools for life). This christams he is 13 and would like to buy him a lower rolling Craftsman chest. I include him on everything I do. When he was 5 he would use my old skate board as his creeper and roll under the car with me. I always tell him no gear heading untill your out of college, do it right.

Bob, when I re-installed my "new" motor & trans in my '75, I had the trans bolted to it, the power steering pump, fuel pump, water pump & alternator on. I did however at that time have the coresupport/radiator/shroud out, so it DID give extra clearance putting my motor/trans and accessories back in as a unit.

I wouldn't go too far. Working on a car in HS might keep him off the streets running with the wrong crowd (as long as grades are good). I'll never forget wrenching on the old wreck I had, listening to the tunes on the radio, and building confidence that I could fix something myself...

Congrats. When I pulled my engine a couple of years ago, I had one tight bell housing bolt that I couldn't get enough leverage with a wrench to break loose. I ended up welding a bar to an old socket and SNAP the darn bolt broke! After the engine was out, I applied some head and WD40 and using channel locks the broken bolt came out very easy. It looks as though it had rusted pretty bad. Glad you didn't have the same experience.

well two more hours of work....where exactly is the core support rust problem suppose to be? in the inner fender area or on the actual core support?? i luckily can't seem to find any in either spot, am i missing something? Also does any body know of a complete hose kit for the car?? one more day of pressure washing and then the steering system comes out.... then painting and the install of the steeroids...almost hopelessly in over out heads!!! and proud of it!!!!
thks bob

The rust is typically on the rad support itself not fender brackets. I can see yours leaning on it's side in picture #1. Check on the bottom rail and partway up the sides. Especially the front facing areas. After cleaning with a wire wheel or sand blasting poke around with a screw driver, I have seen them rust out from the inside. You may have a good one!!!

Suggestion...rather than do more pressure washing I found that scubbing with SOS pads really cleaned things up and also had a sanding effect to lay down paint. I find pressure washing is good to get off the bulk, but after that hand scrubbing will get the surface clean and oil free. I also wiped down everything with solvent just before painting. It sounds like a lot of work but only took me a few hours after it was pressure washed.

I am about to get started on mine too. After seeing the work you have done I think I'll go have a beer and think about it. Should be nice when you are done.

It does look like you have a good one! Also a good indication that the rest of your vette may be clean for rust. In your last pic, notice the two bolt heads at each bottom corner. Check the corners around those bolt heads. From the pic the corners look great, but poke around them with sharp screw driver. Even if you find a few soft areas, yours is in great shape and would be easly repaired. If you send me your email address, I will send you a pic of what a bad one looks like. Takes too long to post here, (to wait for pic approval).
