In an issue of "Auto Restorer" last summer there was an article on them restoring a Dodge Charger. They had made fake face for the newer cd stereo by using the old face of an 8 track. They had used velcro to attach and it even had a tape sticking out of it. Oh by the way the tape had a title called "It's a fake"
I have a Sony that I find very sleek. I forget the model # but you can sort of see it in this pic, there is just enough chrome to compliment the bezel chrome. http://www.angelfire.com/ill/vette/IMG_1814.JPG

Now I don't want anyone to take offense to this; it is just my opinion.
I really don't like the look of modern cd players in classic cars. I think it takes away from the car, looks out of place.
Is there another option to this, to upgrade the sound system?
Like is there a cd player that has the same look as the stock stereo, like retro, or. . . ?
Give me some suggestions. . .
IPOD or something like that with an FM transmitter. Car stays stock but you get ALL the tunes you want. Can get out of the vette and get in another car and its the same music, even use it at home or the gym.
I really like old cars, but much prefer a CD player. An old radio really dates a car. Our Corvettes are modern enough that a C3 player looks great & works better.
Kenwood eXcelon mask
Rarely use it. The engine makes enough music for me.
I am planning on adding on an aftermarket amplifier, and a 6 disc CD changer to the back of my 73. This should be tied into the existing am/fm stereo in the console. The CD changer will have a remote control tied to it so that I can easily change tracks or cds. That way the remote can be hidden between the seats and the ebrake console.
I have seen some photos of members who put the amplifier behind the passeger seat. That is on the bulkhead wall between the seat and the rear section.
Oh, and I cant forget the aftermarket speakers that will go in the rear end also.
The Kenwood "Mask" that Ganey referenced flips around so that when the car is off, all you see is a flat black panel. It's on the idea of a "radio-delete" plate. I don't think I have any pics of mine closed though.
Also, most higher end players have a removable front, so when you take the face off it's black. And you should take the face off anyway as an anti-theft precaution.
But if you want to keep it stock, put the cd player in a storage compartment or something and get a remote.

I guess your right!
Maybe if I get one like 75 Stingray's, with more "chrome" and a less cluttered face, like a touch screen (the cool flat ones with no buttons and a black panel) maybe it wouldnt look so out of place.
The CD changer would work as well.
Hmmm. . . never really though of all these options. . . thankx guys.
427basketcase, that is exactly what I was looking for!!!! I will have to look that up! Perfect. . . Thankx!!!

Gotta disagree here. C3's, especially the later ones actually look "right" with a modern CD player...just not one of those "bling" models with the flashing lights! Here's my install:
That actually looks good! (Didn't mean to sound so suprised)
The only thing that would bother me is that the "glow" on the cd player is blue. . . what color does the dash/instrument cluster glow? My cd display would have to match colors!
I am **** about stuff like that! (Thats what you get for being an artist )
Actually, I changed it to another Blaupunkt unit for that very reason. I couldn't see at night with that blue glow in my face. The new one has a bluish-white "dot matrix" type display, which is much more subtle -- and it still fits in well with the car

Hey is that a Kenwood 9070??
if so i have the same, looks really good in the vette
I'm in the same place as you Jewl. I had to look at dozens of CD players for my '69 pickup before I found one that LOOKED right. Even then, I had to paint it. The dash in the truck was built such that the shape of a standard CD player looked right. However, in the case of my '68 Vette, it's deeply contoured for a shaft-type radio. I plan to install the Secretaudio system next year and leave the factory radio in place. I like the way it looks.
