Default Using compressor for painting

I've got this 60 gallon compressor tank and 6.5 hp motor and want to set it up for painting both house parts and car. I'm gonna start with shutters using exterior latex.

Tell me about (or where to go) any hardware I may need other than spray gun...like specific nozzle types and how to mix enamel, exterior latex, etc. I tinkered with it this past summer and figured out quickly it needed to be thinned out but not familiar with how to mix. Thanks.

Every paint type and paint manufacturer is different. Each manufacturer has a mixing data sheet for each of its products. Once you decide on the paint system you're going to use, get the data sheets and mix accordingly. The sheets will also specify gun nozzle sizes recommended for the product.

I did that once... With Latex you need to add just a LITTLE water . It will look too thick but when it goes on it will flow out and dry fast. With too much water it will spray nice but it will run, not cover good, and take a LONG time to dry. It will actually spray ok even though it looks too thick. Enamel is pretty straight forward as for thinning.

Make sure you have a good water filter on the compressor. I don't mean to filter the water, I mean to remove it from the compressed air.

Default Paint Gun

Tom you are going to have to purchase at least two paint guns. One to do the latex and one to do the automotive. I am not sure as to what type of gun that you would use for residential painting, but I would guess that it would be a "pressure pot". The automotive could be a syphon or a gravity flow. For casual parts painting I probably would go with the syphon gun. Simple. I would go to Eastwood and see what they have to offer. You can spend from under $100 to over $400 for a gun to paint a car. Talk to painters in your area and get ideas.

Be sure to get a filter/water trap. In your area you will have a lot of problems with moisture. It is also a good idea when you are painting laquers and urethanes to have an inline moisture filter.

You'll obviously need a good filter for yourself too, buy a good mask. You will also need some kind of booth because with the HVLP guns the paint gets e..v..e..r..y..w..h..e..r..e

House painting is done with an airless sprayer, and pushes latex without thinning. Shutters, because of their small size, could be done with a compressor and gun. However solvent based paints would be much better with your setup.

Check out www.autobodystore.com they have lots of good tips and you can view a lot of equipment online. I have a devilbis gun and prefer it since they have a plastic bag system you put inside the paint cup that makes clean up much easier. Also, look into fresh air systems. I borrowed one of the $600 - $800 units from a friend and it works very good.

You can build a paint booth using pvc and plastic. If you're going to paint a car body, then you need to filter air into and out of your booth.

And like other's have said, you need to set up your compressor properly to filter out the water and other particles. Search on the internet, you can find more than enough to read to figure it all out, then all you need is practice.
