i'm helping a friend mount the body on a '68 roadster. has anyone had any experience with shims, bolt sequence or is it a fairly simple job for a fairly simple guy ? he bought the vette as a real basket case, and is ready to mount the body on now. thx, jim.....
If you do not have a record of how many shims went where ...
then you'll have to start from scratch.
The shims are placed to compensate for irregularities in the
frame and birdcage. I would start with zero shims around.
Snug the bolts down slowly ... and check for door alignment
as you go. Shim appropriately to get the door opening correct.
I am converting the 70 mounts to later (poly) mounts. I hope
that there is less shimming with these. Is your friend using the
stock aluminum mounts for the 68 ??
There was a good article in Corvette Enthusiast magazine a few months ago regarding using shims to align various panel gaps. I don't remember the details but I think there was a specific sequence that should be followed to get everything aligned. If you can find the article it might be helpful.
