guys,
just wondering what axle ratio you have,
mine is a 3.08 (1977) and i'm gonna change to a 3.77 or 4.11,
i don't do much highway driving so i'm thinking of going to 4.11,
what u think,

I have a '77 with 3.08's as well. I'm debating between the same 3.77's and 4.11's but my tranny gearing is pretty high so I'm thinking 3.77's probably. 3.27 1.98 1.34 1.00 .68 are the numbers for my tranny.
I've got a loooong-legged 2.73!! Coupled with my .64 5th gear and a 6500 redline, I oughta be good for what, 300 mph?!!!
I've already got the 3.77 gears in hand. I probably won't change them until next winter, though. Got too much broken stuff on the list to go messin' with things that DO work!
i had a 1 legged 2.73 in my 1980 camaro,
fitted a 3.73 posi, and the difference was awesome,
felt like i'd fitted a HUGE bang of nitrous,
this is why i'm tempted with the 4.11

I have 3.36 with the same OD as CGGorman. Makes for a long legged cruiser. I don't do any drag racing and these gears are pretty nice around town and great on the highway.

I went from 2.87s in my '82 Vette (15.70 @ 86) to 3.73s (15.003 @ 91).....
I have a 4.11 in my 78' with a 406/475 hp. sbc. If you don't mind tacking around 3000 rpm. at 65 to 70 mpr.with a th350 go for it. If you take your car and put it in second, if it's and auto thats what a 4.11 gear will be like on the highway. If you gave a 4 speed Just leave it in thrd. gear and thats about what a 4.11 feels like . To get the best of both worlds. You might go for an overdrive trans. All I can say is one hell of a tire smoker from red light to red light. If you need a good rear end man their is none better than Dan Vansteel. He built mine and I have run it almost a year . He really stands behind his work. Hope this helps.
Man. I'm a believer that gears are everything. I've got 3.42 in both Corvettes. One is a SB and one is a BB. The BB will run consistent 12.20's. Then I got a Cobra replica with a measley littly 289. BUT, it's got 4.57 gears and will just break into the 10's! If you want F.U.N., go with the lower gears!
I have 3.08's in my vette, but I only cruise and do a lot of highway driving, so they're a good match to the L48/automatic. I had 3.55's in a 70 Firebird 400 and thought they were perfect all around gears with a 4-speed, redlined top speed was about 130, and I did a lot of highway driving. I had 4.11's in my street rod with a 400 SB and 4-speed and it was a tire smoker in all four gears, but top speed was redlined at under 120. In fact 1st gear was only good for smoking about 10 feet before redline. I think the car would have been quicker with 3.73 gears. Joe
I have 4.11's but found with enough motor they are too much gearing. I couldn't hook until 4th gear with my 5 speed and went back to 3.08's. Like them alot better. It hooks in 3rd now.
I have a good set of 4.11's for sale if you are interested.
