Actually, the '80 thru '82 engines are noted for wiping out lobes around mid-life. Like the engine's mid-life crisis. My '82 wiped 2 lobes after 60,000 miles for no apparent reason. All the other lobes and lifters were like new.
Anyway, is it safe to drive my car to storage or should I tow it?
I'm assuming towing would be the way to go.

I don't see any reason not to drive it. I assume the engine wasn't shut down the split second the lobe was worn off. The engine has been run awhile in this condition, a few more minutes should not hurt it more than what it is. Save the money towards the rebuild.

Yes '80 -'82 L-48s were renowned for wiping a cam lobe between 50K & 90K miles. I have two '80s. The 53K Classic White'80 has signs of it going now ( missing already) and the other is the reason I got to buy it. The guy had pulled the engine in 1987 because of a cam lobe going away and he never got the engine rebuilt. I bought it without an engine and transmission.
The L48 camshafts steel was soft from the vendor. It wasn't just Corvettes but all GM L-48 engines during this time. jim

Sorry I thought you were looking for an excuse to build a new engine, and you were actually pretty happy. I remember when I got mine rebuilt, it was runnigng great only using oil and fouling one plug, could not figure it out so I decided to get it rebuilt.
When i went to pick it up the engine builder told me the intake gasket was misaligned and that's why the one plug was fouling, couldn't have been happier with the new motor though

Kept the crank and rods, pistons were Speedpro flat tops with about 9.7:1 or so and they put in CC270H cam and put the stock heads back, had alot more power
Stingray wants $8500 [including headers and pipes]to build me a 383 that will be just under 400HP. Why would I do that instead of just rebuilding my existing engine to the same level of HP for a lot less money...
