Numbers help
Im trying to decode the engine and transmission numbers on my '74 L82 and I have several questions. The last six of the VIN are 404522
1. what is the difference between the L48 and L82 and so on.
2.When a motor is rebuilt and the block is milled will the ID number pad on the right front be milled as well making the numbers all but disappear? (although I know it is more likely that they would filed off)
3. The number cast on the rear of the block is as follows: 8970014.
Is this number enough to say this is not the origonal engine?
4. The car is an automatic and has a tag riveted to the right side that reads: 78P 516, Serial number is 78-CP 32616.
The numbers on the right front pad of the engine I can only make out three or so at this time. Any help would be much appreciated.
