Damn-why don't some of you guys relax and stop being a jerk to this guy. That's alot of money to eat for shipping and if someone has a problem with paying for shipping for free stuff, then maybe you shouldn't participate. Some of you say, "The purpose was to this or that, yada yada yada....You know, that's part of the reason I sometimes get leery participating-because of these attitudes. The guy is being nice enough to give away alot of stuff. So because he'd like some help with shipping means he should not give stuff away? Give me a freaking break. Some people are never happy. Just because I have stuff that someone else can use doesn't mean I want to pay $200 to get rid of it all.
Yes, that makes sense but... The purpose of the christmas give away is to give it away, shipping included. No reason to participate if you cant or dont want to pay the shipping. People regularly give stuff away and the recipient pays shipping. This is a special occasion though, with different rules. If the sender doesnt want to pay shipping, then give the stuff away in another thread that isnt the christmas give away.
But I hear the warning about packing stuff carefully. I ship a lot of ham radio equipment...and my personal rule of thumb is that it must be able to survive a 6-foot fall!!!
Look, I carefully considered what I had to give and elected NOT to list those things that would cost me an unreasonable amount to ship. The rules in the first post of the Christmas thread clearly stated that the recipient should incur no expense... I have a pumpkin I don't need, but I'm not gonna pay $50 (domestic) to ship it. I'll get rid of it at a swap meet, instead. I could have sold my HI-6 for good money, but instead I opted to help out a forum member. I also paid international shipping and declined reimbursement (he offered to pay me).
Maybe I take shipping cost for granted and know about what things cost to ship because I do it for a living (sort of, I build prototype parts and often have to expedite all over the world to major OEMs). Therefore, I knew what my items would require to package and ship and also what I was willing to pay. Live and learn, I guess.
I meant no offense. I guess an internet forum is no place to discuss etiquette...

Ah, UPS. I just received an engine stand. Box was broken up so bad that UPS had to put shrink wrap around it to hold the box together. Shipped a $3000 guitar. Upon arrival, the neck was broken off the body. Irritated me so I checked - stuff has to be packed to withstand a 10' drop. UPS paid for the guitar as I took out extra insurance. Never had a problem with FedEx. If UPS doesn't get their act together, FedEx is going to eat their lunch.
Several of our large clients (fortune 500 companies) at work are dropping UPS AND FedEX. They are now requiring DHL for small (non-freight) shipments. I'm not sure of the circumstances leading to the decision, but it's not isolated.
