Which header out there fits the best, in a small block car. I have a 77 ,stock for now but at some point I'm adding the vortec heads ,[ that should wake things up a bit] manifold & carb .After I finish the rear suspension I'm upgrading the exhaust and was interested in hearing on how different brands of headers fit. Any help would be great.
Dynomax Ceramics fit well. Don't know if the standard 1 5/8" primaries are big enough for hi perf motors though. We'll soon see when I get my car back on the road.
I have a set of Summit full length headers on mine and they fit perfectly. Don't know however if they'll be ideal for the Vortec heads or not, just give them a call and tell them what your application is and they will tell you what the correct set and tube diameter should be.
my father has Hooker SuperComps on his 74 with Vortec heads..fits excellent, don't leak, however they hang low at the collector. If your car is low, they might get bottomed out some..but they look cool.
I have a Dynomax set in my 77. Fit & finish was great.
I'd suggest upgrading to Percy's dead soft gaskets, and even Stage 8 bolts.
I did not use them, and I haven't had any problems, but I plan to upgrade in the future. (although I did go back and tighten the bolts a few months later.. a few were a little loose)
I have a set of Tri-Y "exhaust scavenging" chrome headers on order from Stan's headers ~ 400 + $20 shipping. They are recommended for keeping your low end torque and improving top end.
Thanks guys. Easy install on the 77. The only snag is the spacer for the a/c and that simply involved getting a 3/8 inside diameter x 1/2 outside diameter x 1 1/2 length spacer made by Hillman from Lowes and cutting it to the thickness of the ram horn less the thickness of the header flange using a dremel.
Everything else is a bolt on with the exception of matching the exhaust pipes to the collectors. I paid the shop that did my dual system to cut, match and weld the pipes.
