Default How many teeth do I have?

Err...on my flywheel? Looking at those "mini-starters" and they're asking if I have a 153 tooth flywheel. Car is stock '74 350 w/auto.

Thanks in advance,

'68 and earlier had the "153" 10.4 inch flywheel or flexplate. '69-'82s had the 11.0 inch "168" tooth flywheels/flexplate. There was some deviation to this like the LT-1/ZR-1 cars & such.
Your car, if it has the correct/original flywheel/flexplate should be an 11.0 inch 168tooth wheel.

which mini starter are you going with? I was looking into getting one myself, but with all the crazy choices..i didn't know whether i need 1.9hp cranking, or 3.1hp cranking.

Not sure, but due to the low-compression of my motor, I think the 1.9hp will suffice.

Not to hijack your thread, but this is a good topic. I have a new GM mini-starter that I got for my 350, but will now be building a 400 instead. Anyone know if they require different starters?

All most all of the "mini" starters I saw up at Summit a month ago had "multiple-mounting" holes, so most of them work with either 153 or 168 tooth flywheels.

And furthermore...

I don't have my old starter in front of me. Is the bolt pattern "staggered" or "in-line"? I spent 2 hours staring at the damn thing, you'd think I'd remember...

I've had both my '74 & '75's starters out in the last few months and I know both were NOT STAGGERED.

my 79 is staggered but when i called Mean Green, Inc. (they sell a gear reduction starter) they told me ALL chevy small blocks have both staggered bolt patterns and non-staggered bolt pattern. in other words there's supposed to be another "unused" bolt hole up there. i haven't crawled underkneath to see. any one know if this is true???

Not all blocks have drilling for both styles. Many do but not all. If you have 3 holes, you have both patterns.

I took the starter from my 350 and bolted it directly onto my 400 block. You shouldn't have any problems unless the flywheel has different teeth...

I finally had a chance to look at the starter tonight...the holes are staggered!

WTF, over? Will a in-line bolt pattern mini starter work?

Thanks,

All big block small block starters are the same excluding the different size flywheel if you get an aftermarket starter it should have bolt holes to work with both size flyheels. I bought all my mini starters on Ebay and got the higher power ones for my BBC's

THIS STARTER IS 139.00 ON EBAY AND HAS BOTH MOUNTING HOLES AS WELL AS AN OPTION TO ROTATE THE STARTER.

the holes are staggered to allow it to bolt up to either a 153 or168 flywheel....look at the relationship of the starter gear to the holes that were used...if the starter gear on your in line bolt starter is in the same relationship it will work....if it is off set i'm guessing it won't line up properly...should be obvious in any event when you go to install it..
