Default Steering box question

Is there a difference between the steering box for manual and power steering? Also, is there a year difference? I notice that some steering boxes for sale have different year ranges. And how would I tell what year my steering box is to make sure the replacement is right? My car is a mixed year partswise, with varied things having been replaced with parts anywhere from 68-77.

the boxes are basically the same...a mid-year box has a cast iron top where a late model has an aluminum top....there is a difference in pittman arms between power & manual steering.....

Not all boxes are the same. Yes you have your aluminum cover boxes and your cast cover boxes but the difference is where your couple gets mounted to. Some shafts have little teeth that go all the way around and some have a flat spot in them. Everything in the box is the exact same except for that shaft. Here is how it goes,

63-68 all had the teeth all the way around
69 manual steering cars were the same way
69 w/power steering had the flat spot
70-82 all have the flat spot

Thanks Dan, does the "flat spotted" version work with the earlier columns/joint? My car currently has a 77 column in it (god sometimes I wish I hadn't bought this vette), but I do plan on putting it back to 68 shortly. I do already have the 68 column as well.
