[QUOTE=Mike Mercury]
even with my shut off valve clsoed i still get some heat through the heater core from the transfer of heat through the water in the other line....[./quote]

interesting - I hadn't thought of a conduction source of heat.

during the middle of the last summer is when I installed the vacuum operated valve. So I got a good before/after comparison (especially since the 1973 is the wifes car and I get to be the passenger).

It did make a huge difference. Enough that I can probably let it go as is. My wife only likes to drive the 1973 with the T-Tops off - so I'm sure that's helping with the slight amount of heat that may still be seeping through.

where in ohio do you live....if its inthe north you will never need to worry about.....i lived west of cleveland for acouple of years....so i know the weather there....now cincinatti may be a different story...

I have plugs at the water pump and intake manifold. Two years, no problems. Actually, driving in 30 degree weather, during the day, with windows closed, its not too cold in the car.

There is a book published concerning all the ways one can make the interior of your vette cooler during those hotest days of summer. It is called "Air Conditioning Strategies for the 63-82 Corvette" and is offered by most vette vendors. One of the tests performed was checking the interior temp. with the vaccuum valve installed, with one ball **** valve installed and with two ball valves installed. It was proven that there is conductive heat transfer back thru the heater out going hose to the heater core unless two ball valves were used. This is one of many ways to minimize the amount of heat in the interior of your vette. Reducing the # of rpms your engine turns at highway speeds was another. Installing an overdrive tranny helps. Also, the way the a/c-heater is designed, if you have a/c, the air conditioned air has to pass thru the heater core. If any heat is in the core it lessens the effectiveness of your a/c. If you do use your a/c always set it in the max setting; this is supposed to close the vacuum valve all the way if you have one that works. Setting it on normal will allow that valve to remain partially open and reduces the effectiveness of your a/c. Using the recommendations in this book made my 79 very comfortable to drive during the hottest days last year. Using the two ball **** valves allows me to keep the heat out until I need it in the winter. There are other comments by others doing these things on corvettefaq.com. I hope this info will help us all have more comfortable vettes to ride!

Dayton, 50 miles north of Cincy.

Bernie, thanks for the tips. It must really be a common problem then if a book was printed about the fixes.

First I've head of a publication available for the topic. I'd like to get a copy of one.

Anyone can order "Air Conditioning Strategies for the 63-82 Corvette" from Prestige Publishing, P.O.Box 2786, Grapevine, Texas 76099-2786. Send a check or money order for $19.95 to them with the name of the book and they will send you a copy. Very informative. I followed their recommendations with tremendous success. I hope it helps you as much as it did me.
