I have been spending a good bit of time in the c5 section since I've bought a '99 FRC and they talk about a product for sound proofing their cars called Frost King. It is sold at Home Depot and Lowe's for home a/c ducts. I had to try it on my '77 and I must say WOW! That has got to be one of the best mods that I have done. The car has headers and true duals with Flowmaster 40s, and it used to be pretty loud inside with the windows up but it is now very easy on the ears. Took my friend for a ride today and he couldn't believe it. Can't wait to do my '99. If ya'll haven't tried it or heard about it just look it up in the c5 section and everybody that has tried it has had great results. Will always love my c3 for its looks and styling but the c5 has got the technology.
glad it worked well for you. I had such success with that in my C5 that when we replaced the carpeting in the wifes 1973, I lined the interior with it as well.
It was surprised how much it quieted the interior of the car; being that GM never attempted to quite-down the C3's when they were new. So I was working with an already noisy frame/suspension. And that the FK material is one of the thinnest and lightest of these type materials - I didn't have my hopes up... but it did work very well.
Geeze, it sounds so....Bubba - buying Vette stuff at Home Depot, but if you guys like it, I may have to give it a shot. Is it light weight? What about around high temp stuff like firewall, transmission, etc.?

it's the same material used in the transmission tunnel..
For the transmission tunnel are I used a Product called Reflectix which the c5 guys have had lots of luck with also, but it does not have an adhesive back. You have to buy some sort of spray contact adhesive. The Reflectix is sold at HD and Lowe's also. This mod is definitely worth the time. All I have done was the rear area behind the seats. Can't wait to do the front floor boards and the doors. Good luck to who ever attemts this mod. Mike Mercury's pics are very good, that is exactly what mine looked like after completed. But remember that the battery has side posts and the foil on the FK will ground out the battery so you can't line the side where the terminals are. If you look at Mike's pics you will notice that he stopped at the bat compartment.

good stuff. You dont' want to glue it down for heat reduction uses. Full contact with the warm surface only aids in heat conduction.

you gotta be kidding me... "Bubba" ???? Gee, you can buy the same material with the name Cascade on it and pay twice as much.

actually I did run the FK in the battery compartment; but only on the sides... and I removed the foil backing for the exact reason you described.

Has anyone used this stuff on the under side of the trans tunnel? I bought the Corvette trans tunnel insulator, but it seemed too small to adequately insulate the area. Also, it didn't come far enough forward to reach the foam bellhousing collar. Anybody try it or have another suggestion for that area?

this is what i did with zero clearance after seeing it here on CF(patrick73)...i just kept adding on...and sealed seams with foil tape...there is probably 8 hrs worth of work there fitting everything...

I was at at a Canscar race shop this past weekend and one of the race cars on the hoist had the transmission tunnel done in the same stuff. I asked why and he said it stops heat , it will not burn, doesn't fall off and makes a big difference in drive comfort.
I ordered 3 rolls or 45 square feet and will put it over my dynamat.

Norval totally off Topic and i know Canada is a big country but is the Legendary Motors shop (the guys on TV) around you?
Bobs77Vet: That's a great job under the tunnel. Just so I'm clear, what product is that? Did you use adhesive?
Also for Norval and others who have used these products: Can the Frost King be used exclusively? or should reflectix be used in "hot" area and dynomat or..........??
Thanks Bob, that's just what I was looking for. My Lowes has the Reflectex, but no Frost King wider than 3inches. If HD has it my plan will start to come together. Thanks!

it has an adhesive backing....we cut it in small pieces on odd spots and angles to make it fit right and went over seams with foil adhesive... i used black weather strip adhesive on trans tunnel..
i did melt one product from the home depot store it had a reflective backing and air bubbles inside it...i was planning to use it under the seats and the catalytic converter just melted it away so in really hot areas you may want to test the product first...

Dynamat is first. It sticks well to any surface, it is extremely dense and stops the panels from vibrating which in turn cuts down the noise. Over the dynamat you want an absorber, something that absorbs the noise that got through. I use Frost King or duct insulation for this. It looks almost like dynamat but without the weight.
If you don't want to spend alot go for the Frost King and something similiar. The frost king really cuts down on heat, absorbs some noise and is cheap. It comes in 2 inch, 5 inch and 12 inch by 15 foot rolls and is about $1 per square foot.
I hope it is worth all the time and money I am putting into mine. Next summer will tell for me.
It's kinda risky to use the FK and Reflectix outside of the cockpit. Both have high temp ratings up to 180 degrees. Above that the dense foam of the FK will turn into putty; and the plastic bubble insulator used on the Reflectix will start to melt.
In the engine compartment, temps easily pass the 180 degree point - and near the tranny & exhaust as well.
just some friendly advice to "be careful out there". One wouldn't want to do this twice... and also be handed a mess to clean up.
