Just picked up a pair of old-school (read: Thick & Heavy) finned cast aluminum valve covers. Do I need valve cover hold-downs or are those specifically for the stamped steel covers?
I've always thought they are a stamped sheetmetal item only. Not to say they might not be beneficial on a cast valve cover...
I'd give it a shot with one of felpro's re-useable valvecover gaskets and a tack coat of gasketmaker. If both surfaces are relatively true... you shouldnt have any issues!
Might want to lay a straight edge across the valvecover gasket surfaces just for grins and giggles...
you don't need hold-downs with aluminum valve covers, just a flat washer under the bolt. also, don't glue both sides of the gasket, you'll never get them off. glue the gasket to the valve cover and lightly rtv the motor side. joe
