How would I know if I have a bad lifter, and are they easy to fix? I hear a tapping sound from the motor when its cold. The sound seems to go away after the car warms up a bit. It sounds like its coming from the top of the motor, around the area of the valve cover. Thanks
Check the valve adjustment first - this is easy to do and all you need to replace is two inexpensive valve cover gaskets...
If this does not help then it may be a lifter..... these are not expensive either but you'll have to take the valve covers and the intake off.....
You're saying the noise is gone when the engine is warm... it could be a lifter that is just beginning to fail.... you don't have to fix it immediately, it will get louder over time...then it's time to fix it....
