Default Finishing the Big Block

OK, I've got my BB 402 back from the engine shop. It's been mag'ed and hot tanked, new frost plugs and cam bearings, all honing is done and block is painted. We're about ready to start reassembly with the stock crank and pistons. I'm looking to finish this project with about 425 horsepower on pump gas with about 9:1 compression. It's a package goin in a 1979 Vette (3600lbs) with a TH-350 transmission and a TCI street-fighter convertor (3200 stall roughly). Rear End is equipped with the original 3:55 gears.

I do plan to street this car/engine combo however I am looking to improve my drag racing times as well. I also run an MSD-6AL with a 3 Step and a recurved GM distributor. I also have had great luck running the Quadrajet Carb(thanks Lars).

Those are the things that are official. Now I have a few decisions that must be made soon. I'm planning to order a set of oval port Edelbrock Performer RPm heads, and then likely also a Performer RPM intake. Exhaust will likely flow through some smaller tube headers (under 2 inch).

My question is does any of this sound logical? Now please note I know the most important item in this whole combo is gonna be the cam selection. Does anyone have any advice to help me get this combo completed.

My car has run 13.9's with its original L-48 so I'm lookin to bump myself into another class here. But I'm also concerned about having a good street and strip package.

If ya have any advice for me, I'd love to hear it.

Thanks

Sounds like you have a prity good combo there. As far as camshafts go you need to stay conservative. Something with around 220 degrees duration at .050" lift and about .480" to .500" lift at the valve would be just the ticket.

I have my Desktop Dyno chewing on the combo now right now but it looks like it will end up at about 420 hp at 5500 rpm.

We'll see.

Ok here is what Desktop Dyno has to say.

Cam specs.
Intake duration- 214 degrees at .050" lift.
Exhaust duration- 230 degrees at .050" lift.
Lift at the valves- .500" (Note: You may have to go to .480" on the intake.)
Lobe center angle- 114 degrees.
Intake centerline- 115 degrees.

Horsepower and torque ended up being 430/5500 and 444/4500 respectively.

This should be a nice little motor.

Hope this helps.

Just a thought - I used those heads on a BB - depending on what kind of matchup you want on the exhaust ports and headers - check header to exhaust port matchup. If the header inlet is "circular" it takes a pretty big circle to cover that squared/oval exhaust port. For instance a Hedman 2 inch will not cover the exhaust port - I went with 2 1/8. Maybe if the header inlet is "squared" you could cover with smaller headers. Lay the header gasket across the head exhaust port - you'll see what I mean.

Good luck!
